Reds drop opener to Phillies, 4-3

- First an injury update....LHP Bill Bray this morning had "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...he is expected to miss 10-12 months...Bray has been on Class AAA Louisville's disabled list since 4/16.

- As for Joey Votto....The Reds still don't know what's wrong. He had more tests Tuesday in here in town, and more were scheduled for the next few days to try to determine what is causing the dizziness.

- Quite an interesting lineup last night....without Votto in again, they use Rosales at 1B, Hairston at 3B, and Darnell McDonald in LF. Anyone else wonder why Johnny Gomes is still sitting in Louisville?? Doesn't make much sense to me. He's gotta be more productive off the bench than McDonald right? When you're losing 1 run games in the later innings...you need to have guys off the bench that can produce.

- Johnny Cueto came in hot as any pitcher in baseball....his 1.93 ERA entering last night was 3rd best among all pitchers. But Cole Hamels pitched with an early lead and finished with 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, and 7K...which was enough to earn the rain. The Phillies bullpen allowed just two hits in the final three innings.

- What you hope is that a loss to a division leading team with a very, very good pitcher doesn't shake the confidence of a team that has played very well the last two weeks (excluding the 3 game sweep in SD). Especially with Cleveland and Houston coming in at the end of the week...the Reds would ill afford to lose the momentum they have gained since the beginning of May.

Sean Miller quickly adapting to life out west
Mike Decourcy, Sporting News
Sean Miller has been in Tucson less than two months, and already he talks like a Chamber of Commerce lifer. Perhaps it is force of habit. Part of his job description as Arizona head coach is to sell the place to recruits, and now he is pitching a visit to the desert to an old acquaintance.
