Reds take care of Indians 3-1 on Friday
- It's never good to fall behind early, and Bronson Arroyo did in the 1st inning thanks to a Grady Sizemore HR....but Cincy was able to plate a run of their own in the very next half-inning. The Reds have done a good job "answering the bell" for the most part when the opponents score runs. Thankfully, Arroyo pitched outstanding the rest of the way and did his part. He finished with 8.0 IP, 5 hits, 1 run allowed, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Very, very solid.
- It was a very frustrating night offensively early on...as they had multiple opportunities to plate runs with guys in scoring position...including a couple bases loaded situations that resulted in just 1 run. In fact, Cincy stranded 10 runners on the night...the sixth time they've left 10+ on base. Luckily, Johnny Gomes did what he's done a lot in Louisville this season (see next bullet).
- It took Johnny Gomes all of 1 pitch to come off the bench and scorch a ball into the corner for a double and although he was immediately replaced for a pinch runner, that's the type of quick-hitting offense the Reds could use off the bench. It's something Darnell McDonald just could not do. And as luck would have it, Gomes' hit resulted in the game-winning run.
- I'm very much looking forward to seeing Homer Bailey pitch against the Tribe. If he can put together a good outing...I don't see any reason you would send him back to AAA anytime soon. Hopefully he can throw a gem.
- Despite all the scary moments that Francisco Cordero provides....you gotta tip your cap to him thus far this season. With the save Friday, he now has 11 in 2009....good for 2nd in MLB.

You never wanna wish injury on a player, but this could REALLY help the Reds....The Chicago Cubs placed pitcher Rich Harden on the disabled list because of a back strain on Friday.

NFL opens door on deals with state lotteries....After decades of a strict no-gambling policy, the NFL's owners voted Wednesday to allow teams to sign licensing deals with state-sponsored lotteries that could bring the league new revenue in a weak economy. The NFL remains strongly opposed to betting on the outcome of games, but commissioner Roger Goodell said lottery deals could generate money for "many different public purposes."

NFL on VERSUS?? Perhaps.....NBC's contract to carry "Sunday Night Football," however, expires after the 2011 season. And there's some talk that Versus might go after it.

Tony Dungy believes in Michael Vick....Former Colts and Bucs coach Tony Dungy offered the clearest statement yet regarding his belief that quarterback Mike Vick should be reinstated to the NFL. Without actually saying that he believes Vick should be reinstated to the NFL. ?I believe in him,? Dungy said on Friday?s edition of The Dan Patrick Show.

The TV in the $1 billion stadium just has to be good.....The Mitsubishi board at the new Cowboy Stadium is 160 feet long - more than half a football field - and 72 feet high. It would take nearly 5,000 52-inch flat panel TVs to equal the more than 23,000 square feet of video displays facing each sideline. Two screens that are 29 feet by 51 feet are attached to each end.

A look into the Reds future...

HORST-CASE SCENARIO
LHP
Jeremy Horst (Sarasota) last night made his 3rd consecutive start
against Jupiter (4th of the season) and allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 8.0
innings (2bb, 6k)...over his last 2 starts, he?s given up just 2 runs
over 14ip (8h, 10k).
PUCKETT LIST
IF Cody Puckett
(Dayton) last night at Quad Cities belted his 2nd home run in as many
nights...he ranks T4th in the Midwest League with 7 homers...since 5/5,
Puckett has gone 22-for-62 (.355) to raise his batting average 59
points.
SOTO POPINSKI
IF Neftali Soto (Sarasota) has
hit safely in 18 of his last 22 games dating back to 4/27 (27-79, .342)
to lift his batting average from .194 to .274...in 19 games this season
at Ed Smith Stadium, Soto is batting .294 with 2 HR and 6 RBI compared
to a .256 average in 20 games on the road.
"QUOTE BOAT"
?I
can?t sugarcoat this: We are terrible defensively. The numbers bear me
out. That doesn?t even include the balls that drop and the balls that
get through the infield. It puts a lot of pressure on your pitching
staff. It?s tough to be a pitcher when your defense is as bad as our
defense has been.? - Louisville manager Rick Sweet, whose Bats have
lost 8 straight and lead the International League with 47 errors.

This weekend's Definition of Duh....Mary Kay Letourneau, who served time in the 90s for raping her then student Vili Fualaau, will do it up right at some joint called the Fuel Sports Eats and Beats this Saturday. She's hosting a "Hot For Teacher" night. This is apparently the third such event they've done. She greets people and he DJs. Is there a special on pitchers of beer??

Best business idea you'll see this weekend....Play Golf Designs offers up rounds of golf with attractive girls who wear a little less than the usual argyle vests and khaki pants. The idea is for guys to spice up an otherwise dull corporate outing or bachelor party. All of the golfers hired play at the elite level, being members of the LPGA, Ladies European Tour, CN Canadian Tour and more.
